What is a Pawn Ticket?

A pawn ticket (also called a pledge receipt, pawning receipt, or jewel loan receipt) is the official document issued by a pawn broker to a customer at the time of gold loan disbursement. It is a legal contract between the two parties recording all the terms of the gold pledge — the gold details, loan amount, interest rate, due date, and the rights and obligations of both parties.

Every state Pawn Brokers Act in India mandates that a pawn ticket must be issued for every single pledge without exception. A pawn broker who lends money against gold without issuing a pawn ticket is in violation of the state act — regardless of whether it is a small loan for a trusted customer or a large loan for a first-time visitor.

ℹ️

The pawn ticket is your legal protection

For the borrower: The pawn ticket is proof that you pledged your gold with this specific pawn broker, on this date, for this amount. It is the document you present to collect your gold. Without it, collecting your gold becomes legally complicated. Always keep your pawn ticket safe.

For the pawn broker: The pawn ticket is proof that the customer agreed to the loan terms — the interest rate, the due date, and the conditions. It is your primary defence in any customer dispute.

What a Pawn Ticket Must Contain

Under state Pawn Brokers Acts, a pawn ticket must contain at minimum the following information:

  • Pawn broker's name, address, and licence number — proves the lender is operating legally
  • Serial number / ticket number — unique identifier linking the ticket to the pledge register
  • Date of pledge — start date for interest calculation
  • Customer's name and address — as per Aadhaar
  • Customer's Aadhaar number — masked; for KYC compliance
  • Description of pledged items — type (chain, bangle, ring), number of pieces
  • Gold weight — in grams, to 2 decimal places
  • Gold purity (karat) — 24K, 22K, 18K, 14K
  • Loan amount disbursed — in rupees
  • Interest rate — annual rate (e.g., 18% per annum)
  • Monthly interest amount — the actual rupee amount the customer pays monthly
  • Due date — when the full principal must be repaid
  • Conditions of pledge — what happens if not repaid (auction)
  • Signatures — both pawn broker and customer must sign

Best Practice — Additional Information

Beyond the legal minimum, professional pawn shops using modern software include several additional items on the pawn ticket that build customer trust and prevent disputes:

  • Customer photograph — small photo on the ticket for identification
  • Gold market value at pledge date — shows the customer you calculated correctly
  • LTV percentage applied — transparent about how the loan amount was determined
  • Total repayment at maturity — total of principal + interest if held to the due date
  • Stepped rate disclosure — if rates change after a period, all tiers shown upfront
  • Regional language — South Indian pawn shops print tickets in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, or Kannada

What If the Customer Loses Their Pawn Ticket?

A customer who loses their pawn ticket can still potentially redeem their gold — but it is more complicated. The process typically involves:

  • Customer provides Aadhaar and personal details to identify the loan in the register
  • Pawn broker verifies identity thoroughly before releasing gold
  • A duplicate ticket may be issued for a small fee after identity verification
  • Some state acts require a formal declaration or indemnity bond before releasing gold without the original ticket
  • The gold loan software's digital records are extremely valuable here — enabling instant lookup of the customer's loan history by Aadhaar or phone number
